The Fiery Furnace hike is one of those hikes that holds a lot of mystery. It’s described as a maze that is not a simple trail, but one that involves some simple climbing, some scooting and a little bit of scrambling. It all might sound intimidating, but rest assured – if you are an average, or even a beginner hiker you will not just be able to get through the Fiery Furnace, you will love the experience!

The biggest obstacle for the Fiery Furnace up to now has been finding the way. If there are two words that still describe it best they are “the maze.” For many years hikers were getting lost or not seeing the entire area and that drove many to hire expensive guides to show them the way. In 2017 the park service suspended commercial activity inside the Fiery Furnace which left only one option for those new to the Fiery Furnace to see it and that is on a ranger guided tour. But let’s face it, a lot of people don’t like to hike in a group.

If you are one of those hikers who really enjoys being able to explore and do things on your own, our DIY guide to the Fiery Furnace is the answer. It will show you with confidence the way through the Fiery Furnace and it will show you how to find all the hidden arches along the way!

The Fiery Furnace Hike has been a source of intrigue for hikers for many years. There is a lot written about it because it’s not your typical hike. It is a maze which isn’t always easy to explore. In the past, hikers could hire a private guide to hike the Fiery Furnace and the guides made the experience enjoyable by keeping their guests safely on path and taking their guests to all the side canyons with arches. Since 2017, the park service put a ban on commercial tours and the only way to see the place is with a ranger tour or on your own. Not everyone likes to hike in a group, but doing it on your own still poses challenges despite the rangers’ attempt to make it easier. Some hikers still get lost and most, if not all, miss all the treasures along the way.

We put our Fiery Furnace DIY guide together with the independent hiker in mind after saving many hikers from becoming lost inside the Fiery Furnace. People love the experience, but the anxiety can run high inside the Fiery Furnace when you feel turned around and lost.

Here is an e-mail from a hiker we received who hiked the Fiery Furnace using our guide on March 25, 2019:

“We did the Fiery Furnace on Monday. Just wanted to let you know that your Guide was amazing. We never would have found our way around without it. The pictures were incredible for helping us find our way through. It made exploring so much more comfortable since we knew we would not get lost. The tips to get to the side attractions was also a huge bonus. Thank you so much.”

That depends on a few factors. How far are you planning on hiking in the Devil’s Garden? Devils Garden can be a short hike to landscape arch or double-o arch or an 8 mile loop hike along the primitive loop which will take you by both of the arches, but also much more into the backcountry. If you choose to do the 8 mile loop, you might not have much energy left to do anything else except get into your hotel hot tub! If you only choose to explore only the most popular area of Devil’s Garden you could be done in 2-3 hours and then you could still do the Fiery Furnace in the afternoon.

Now, if you’re hiking in Moab in the middle of the summer you will quickly realize that afternoons are best for a long siesta in the shade of a cottonwood tree, on a sandy beach of the Colorado river, and not hiking. But if you are super determined, the Fiery Furnace due to its nature is largely in the shade most of the day so it could be done in the afternoon as long as you bring lots of water and take lots of breaks. Even though it’s only 2 miles, it will feel like exercise because you will be doing a lot of climbing and maneuvering which will wear you out.

So, it’s possible to do both, but why? Why not just add another day to your Moab visit and really enjoy these two places the way they should be enjoyed – deliberately and in-depth!

Good ones! 🙂

The most important thing about your shoes is traction. The traction will actually help you with some of the more technical areas of the Fiery Furnace. I’m not a big fan of wearing hiking shoes, but I can guarantee you that going into the Fiery Furnace with shoes that are old and have no good traction will actually make your hike less enjoyable. There are so many places along this hike that require good traction that having bad shoes can distract you from the experience. Good shoes will give you confidence that will allow you to focus on the scenery and the fun of exploration!

Let’s address my favorite hiking shoe – the hiking sandal. Yes, they are cool and fun to wear, but I wouldn’t recommend them for this hike. Main reason being the desert environment. The desert is dusty and sandy and all that dirt and sand will get into your sandals and rub your skin raw. As much as I love my hiking sandals, I avoid wearing them in the desert unless I’m willing to invest into a box of bandaids at the end of the day. However, the most important things is lack of protection from the snake bites!!! I remember hearing a story once about a guy who was saved from a rattlesnake bite because it bit into his high hiking shoe and not into his leg – that was enough to convince me that wearing hiking boots in the desert is a GOOD IDEA!

How do you get a permit for the Fiery Furnace? You can get it in person at the Arches Visitor Center. Your entire hiking group needs to be present for the permit purchase or otherwise the park won’t issue the permit. Everyone in your group will also be required to watch a 20 minute video which talks about why the Fiery Furnace is protected, how to protect it while you hike and a few other things that are important. The permits cost $6/pp.

If you are a frequent Fiery Furnace hiker, the park service offers annual passes for the Fiery Furnace. With an annual pass you pay $20 up front for the whole year and then the permits you get for individual hikes are free for the year, but the biggest benefit is that you only have to watch the 20 minute video once at the time of annual permit purchase.

You’ve read about the hike, you’ve read the reviews and you feel a little bit of hesitation. The reviews mention the complex landscape, hikers getting disoriented, and you’re thinking this is not for me. That could not be further from the truth.

Yes, it takes about 3-4 times of being guided by someone who knows the hike before one can remember the whole way. This has been an issue with the Fiery Furnace from the beginning. For many years the park service allowed commercial guides to take people through. In 2017 commercial tours were banned and now you can only do the hike either on your own or a park ranger led tour.

The park ranger led tours are good, but you will be hiking in a large group which is not the experience you really want to have in the Fiery Furnace. The Fiery Furnace is so spectacular and so unique and has to many places to explore that you don’t want to be tied to a large group, limited by their pace and their track. Many people describe the Fiery Furnace as a playground and some compare hiking it to being inside a video game. Those experiences can only be achieved if you’re hiking to Fiery Furnace on your OWN!

With our downloadable trail info you will not miss any of the hidden treasures – all nine of the arches – and you will gain so much by being able to explore it on your own, at your own pace. Feel like a kid again and do it on your OWN!

The Fiery Furnace hike for someone doing it for the first time can feel intimidating. For someone who’s done it a number of times, it’s the most fun, exciting and addictive adventure. The Fiery Furnace is so cool, it DOES NOT GET OLD. That should tell you that it’s a must for everyone who’s even remotely considering doing it.

Yes, there are some places in the Fiery Furnace that are a little more technical, but for an average hiker they will feel exciting, exhilarating, but they won’t be adrenaline inducing if you’re worried about that. Any part of the hike that seems technical can be approached slowly and deliberately and with some focus done in a very safe way. However, if you are someone who doesn’t hike a lot, some of the places can feel challenging, but even then I’m convinced that you can do it if you’re just a little bit curious about this incredible hike.

Over 27,000 people do the hike each year on their own and a similar number of guests do it as part of a ranger guided tour. Very few injuries ever occur inside the Fiery Furnace so go ahead give it a try – we promise you you WILL NOT REGRET IT (and you will want to come back over and over and over again!)

You can book a Fiery Furnace park ranger guided tour online at the Recreation.gov website. The following link will take you directly to the Fiery Furnace reservation page. You can reserve your guided group tour up to 6 months in advance and at this point the tours are booking out that far in advance so if you want to hike the Fiery Furnace on a park ranger guided tour you might have to plan your vacation 6 months in advance!

When booking online, you will be booking the morning 9am tour. But the park also offers an afternoon tour. The afternoon tour is only available for purchase in person at the Arches Visitor Center. You can purchase this tour 7 days in advance and these tours also sell out like crazy in season. So once again, if you really want to hike the Fiery Furnace you might have to build some layover time in Moab so you can get in on the craziness!

IF the guided tours are all gone, consider doing the hike on your own. With our downloadable trail info you can easily do the hike yourself and see more than you would on a park ranger guided tour. With our product you will be able to take your time, explore the Fiery Furnace in-depth, and feel like you’re a kid at a large adult size playground (don’t worry, we don’t tell anyone how much fun you had – you can do that yourself!)

You see two miles and you think, oh that’s nothing. Well, nothing could be further from the truth! Fiery Furnace is not the most strenuous hike, but it will feel a little more like a session at the gym than a short two miles hike! Why? Because you will have fun scrambling, climbing up using your hands, scooting across large rocks and crevices – basically using your entire body! Very little of the hike is on flat, boring trail – most of the two miles are over slickrock heading up down and left and right. And at the end you will feel so exhilarated and happy and won’t even realize the hike was a little strenuous. So maybe a session at the gym is a bad analogy because who loves that? THIS. YOU. WILL. LOVE.

The key to staying happy on this trail and water, water, water! Bring lots especially when hiking in the summer!
