Money well spent. Ranger tours were sold out for days in off peak season. We didn’t travel this far to not do this hike. So we purchased the required permit (note they also sell out especially on the weekends), purchased this guide and arrived at sunrise. Being in the “furnace” without dozens of other hikers was amazing. Found the guide to not only be helpful, but it gave us confidence that we wouldn’t make a foolish move. If you are hiking with two or more people then this guide more then pays for itself vs. the two hour ranger led tour. You get to spend as much time as you want, explore more, and not wait for 20 people to maneuver through the course. We spent three prime hours (note: we did not have to wait for anyone which would have taken longer). I only wish I had read through the tour the night before-I think it would have been helpful. I am glad the tours were sold out-we had a far superior experience!
