Know About Safety Before Hiking

Because of its “reputation” and all the “checks” the park service has put into place typically people end up being a lot more cautious on this hike and believe it or not fewer injuries occur inside the Fiery Furnace than at other locations inside the park. However, any outdoor activity is inherently risky so here are a few things to keep in mind to keep yourself and your group safe.

You will love every minute of it!

If you are an average hiker with a good sense of balance, don’t have an overwhelming fear of heights, don’t have any range of motion issues and you’re hiking on a good weather day, you should have no problems making it through the Fiery Furnace – and just the opposite, you will love every minute of the experience! However, if at any point you feel like the hike is too much, you can turn around and go back the same way you came in.

Safety

01.

Rock Falls

Though rare, rock falls can occur at any time in this kind of landscape. Rockfalls are more frequent in winter and spring and immediately after a rain event. So, be aware of your surroundings and don’t hang out underneath arches or up against the sandstone walls!

02.

Water

Bring minimum of 3 liters of water per person. The dry desert heat is very dangerous. It is deceptively pleasant, but not having enough water can quickly lead to death. Heat exhaustion due to not drinking enough water, and not resting enough, is one of the biggest causes for search and rescue in Moab and the desert in general.

03.

Heights

Having a fear of heights can make some parts of the Fiery Furnace challenging.

04.

Hiking Shoes

Because you will be hiking over slickrock, hiking shoes with good traction are essential.

05.

Communication

There is little to no cell service in the Fiery Furnace. You should always carry a Satellite Communication device whenever traveling in the back-country to be able to call for help in case of a life threatening emergency. A whistle is also a great option to signal other hikers.

06.

Start Time

Start early – you have better chances of having someone come up behind you if you find yourself in trouble. Starting early will also help you avoid the brutal summer heat. Get to the park no later than 8 am to avoid lines at the entrance booths!

07.

Flora & Fauna

Beware of rattle snakes and scorpions – watch where you step at all times and where you put your hands. You can find poison ivy in the Fiery Furnace. Avoid touching it by knowing how to identify it.

08.

Be Landscape Aware

Be landscape aware – some places in the Fiery Furnace lead straight to steep and exposed cliffs. Slow down, keep a good balance and turn around if the terrain is too challenging .

09.

First Aid

Always have a first aid kit and know how to use it. Need we say more?

10.

Duration

Allow 2-3 hours for the hike, though it’s possible to spend even more time exploring the Fiery Furnace.

11.

Weather

Rain, snow and ice can make hiking the Fiery Furnace more challenging or plain dangerous. Use your good judgment regarding weather conditions! They can change fast so always check the weather forecast before heading out!
